AIDS, Alcohol, Cocaine, Herion, Crack, Homocide, Suicide, Car Accidents, and Fire COMBINED!

New York State is taking quick, agressive action to combat the health consequences of vaping and flavored products.

The Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness Coalition

The Chemung County Health Department is the lead agency for the Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness Coalition (STTAC).

The Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness Coalition (STTAC) is a community partnership grant-funded by the New York State Department of Health Bureau of Tobacco Control (BTC). STTAC is made up of two main components, Community Engagement and Reality Check. These components work together, seeking to build healthier communities through tobacco-free living in Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben Counties. We have several initiatives and efforts to help us work towards our goal of bettering lives and communities.

Reality Check (RC) is the youth action component of the New York State Bureau of Tobacco Control Program, and has been in existence since 2001. For the past thirteen years, youth ages 13-18 from all over New York have worked hard to educate their peers, parents, legislators, community members and key decision makers on the tobacco industry's manipulative marketing practices and how they target youth to become replacement smokers.

The teens of Reality Check have worked on numerous initiatives over the years. Reality Check was instrumental in getting tobacco ads out of certain magazines that are sent to schools and read by youth. We are working with national leaders and other states to get smoking out of youth rated films. Currently, we are also working to eliminate the influence the industry has in retail stores. Reality Check has also had great success in working with parks and other outdoor spaces, getting them to adopt policies to become smoke-free.
