Vapor Intrusion

When groundwater or soil contamination exists, there is a potential for gaseous components of the contamination to enter your home.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has been revisiting hazardous waste sites across the country to evaluate whether soil vapor intrusion is occurring in nearby homes.

In Chemung County, there are 2 Superfund sites that are being evaluated.  Those are the Kentucky Avenue Well Site in Horseheads and the Facet Enterprises/Purolator site in Elmira Heights.

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) have both been working with the USEPA on these sites.  The NYSDOH has developed some informative literature regarding "exposure" in general, soil vapor intrusion, and a specific contaminant of concern called TCE.  To download a copy of these documents, click on the name below:

The USEPA had a Public Availability Session on August 29, 2007 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Thomas Edison High School.  During this session, the public had an opportunity to discuss questions and issues "one on one" with Federal, State, and Local officials.  There were also two (identical) formal presentations made.  The slides used during the presentations are presented below in the following four links:

The USEPA has a website link with more useful information related to soil vapor intrusion.
