“The Chemung Valley Rural Health Network Partners to Celebrate National Rural Health Day”

ELMIRA- The Chemung Valley Rural Health Network (CVRHN) will join the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) and other state/national rural stakeholders in celebrating the first-ever National Rural Health Day on Thursday, November 17, 2011.

NOSORH created National Rural Health Day as a way to showcase rural America; increase awareness of rural health-related issues; and promote the efforts of NOSORH, State Offices of Rural Health and others in addressing those issues.  Plans call for National Rural Health Day to become an annual celebration on the third Thursday of each November.

While 16 % of our population lives in rural places only 9% of health providers serve those communities. Rural communities face accessibility issues, a lack of healthcare providers, growing percentages of underinsured citizens and other unique challenges. Among those challenges are an aging and a dispersed population. As our population ages, more health services are require at a time when there is a shortage in health workforce. Those who live in rural places often must travel long distances to receive the care they need.

“Rural Health Networks in our area partner with organizations such as Area Health Education Centers to encourage students, as young as grade school, to consider and prepare for a health career,” said Joyce Hyatt, PhD, RN, director of the CVRHN.  “These are the “pipeline” programs that will promote adequate numbers and maintain the quality of our health workforce. If you have influence in a rural child’s life, encourage them to prepare for a health career in our rural community,” added Hyatt.

It is the mission of the Chemung Valley Rural Health Network to support the improvement of health care outcomes for all Chemung County residents by assisting health and human service providers in the development of a collaborative network of healthcare education and information systems.
